Deep Strike Ruler Template 9"
A 9" Deep Strike Rapid Deployment Ruler is a straight, curved-edge measuring stick made from Perspex that measures exactly nine inches, the exact distance that miniatures must maintain when entering the tabletop from reserve in Warhammer 40,000® . Cut from 3mm fluorescent Perspex, this 100% compatible tool is just the right thickness to slide between closely packed scenery without shifting. As a rigid piece—not a tape measure—it can be laid flat against a miniature’s base and rotated to draw a perfect nine-inch exclusion circle in any direction.
According to the 10th Edition Rapid Deployment rule , a unit that starts the game in reserves can be deployed “anywhere on the battlefield that is more than 9″ horizontally from all enemy models” during your Reinforcement Step. The distance is measured from base to base (or hull to base for vehicles) horizontally—height is ignored—so a reliable nine-inch calibre is essential.
During a match, the Deep Strike measuring stick streamlines deployment: touch one end to the nearest enemy base, pivot the Deep Strike stick to draw an invisible circle, and instantly know the nearest legal drop point. Many players use it before the start, placing it around key objectives to visualize off-limits areas that the opponent won't be able to use on turn 2. The fixed length prevents unintentional compression or stretching of a tape, giving both sides identical, verifiable measurements.
Since arguments over “eyeballing” nine inches are a common tournament delay, referees often recommend or even facilitate these Deep Strike rules. A single fluorescent marker is more visible than faint meter markers, so opponents check distances at a glance rather than measuring multiple times. This consistency speeds up rounds and prevents a unit from ending up ⅛″ too close.
Any unit with Rapid Deployment, Teleport, Zero Deployment, or similar benefits from the rule— Terminators, Blood Guard, Tyranid Warriors with Drills, Tau Armor with Manta-Strike, Chaos Raptors, etc. Additionally, the nine-inch border serves as a quick reference for Advance+Move, Heroic Intervention bubbles, and Objective Control radiuses. In short, the 9-inch Rule is a small investment that pays for itself every time reinforcements come in, keeping your deployments legal and conflict-free.
GSW's version of the rapid-deployment ruler looks like something out of a neon-lit sci-fi booth: laser-cut from transparent fluorescent acrylic, it catches ambient light and glows around the edges, so the etched markings remain clear even in dimly lit rooms. The 3mm thickness keeps it perfectly rigid, while the polished bevel allows it to slide between grouped models without scratching the paint.
